Dr. David Rempel, MD, MPH
Director, UCSF/UCB Ergonomics Program
Dr. Rempel is a Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco in the Division of Occupational Medicine as well as an Associate Professor of Bioengineering
at the University of California, Berkeley. He is a Fellow of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, a Fellow in the American College of Physicians, and a Certified Professional Ergonomist.
Dr. Rempel has conducted studies of carpal tunnel syndrome and other musculoskeletal disorders among postal workers, computer users, construction workers, grocery workers and plumbers. He has just completed two randomized intervention studies among computer users and engineers. He was an ergonomics consultant to Cal/OSHA from 1988 to 1990 and a member of Cal/OSHA's Ergonomics Expert Subcommittee, the ANSI Z365 Committee (Control of Cumulative Trauma Disorders), and the NAS Panel on Musculoskeletal Disorders in the Workplace.
Dr. Rempel will be speaking on the results of recent research in the area of computer use ergonomics. Well designed prospective studies and randomized intervention
trials provide new insights into risk factors and solutions for managing musculoskeletal disorders among computer users. Common recommendations may do more harm than good. The findings of these new studies (some still unpublished)
will be reviewed and practical recommendations will be extracted.
The Executive Committee will meet at the restaurant at 3:30 pm to conduct Local Section business. As always, interested parties are encouraged and welcome to attend.
