Heat Stress
Dr. Dennis Grahn
Stanford University
Anyone that attended the 2002 Symposium will remember the incredible presentation he provided on heat stress and new techniques to deal with it. At the July meeting he will be presenting an update including all his recent progress and findings.
He will describe his Rapid Thermal Exchange (RTX) system that actually cools the body from the inside out, cooling the core of the body rather than trying to cool through the skin which he has found can be dangerous. His research has demonstrated that when warm skin encounters the cold, the blood vessels near the surface of the skin constrict, trapping heat inside the body, which only causes internal organs to become more overheated. His system essentially cools the blood in an athlete’s palm and takes the cooled blood to the rest of the body.
His research applications have included the San Francisco 49ers, Stanford University sports teams, NBA basketball teams, Major League Baseball teams, Olympic athletes, triathletes, extreme sports athletes, and more recently military personnel. Last time he spoke to us he reported new contracts with the military for desert conditions applications. It should be extremely interesting to hear about his progress.
Attending three dinner meetings is normally worth 0.5 ABIH certificate maintenance points.
