Responsiblities 
 
Develop systems to proactively define potential areas of microbial risk in equipment design, maintenance, materials, manufacturing and packaging processes and cleaning and sanitization.  Implements continuous mitigation and improvement programs across all areas of the Plant, oversee new process, equipment and products to identify and eliminate microbial risks and train personnel at all functions in the development, manufacture, and storage of liquids products to prevent microbial contamination at each stage of the process.  Provides technical expertise to colleagues regarding the interpretation and/or implementation of cGMP hygienic practices.  Assure hygienic systems, from raw material sampling, pre-weigh, compounding, packaging and  microbiological testing are in compliance with the principles outlined in the Company Code of Hygienic Practices and are correctly implemented and controlled.  Establish Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs) to reduce microbiological risk within the production environment and provide review or approval of SOP's as assigned.  Conduct hygienic practice audits of the test laboratory and production environment.  Troubleshoot equipment and methodologies, communicate microbiological risk to customers and conduct Micro robustness reviews at senior management levels.  Lead Investigations of micro failures to ensure true root cause is identified and documented within the Quality Systems to ensure Compliance and corrective and preventive actions have been effective.  Provide reports, trend analysis or feedback to inform management of quality trends and to establish corrective actions.  Lead CAPA systems, investigation activities, provide effective corrective actions, provide review of reports associated with significant microbiological quality issues.  Provide technical support to the new product introduction process, including review of raw material and finished product microbiological risk classifications, equipment train readiness, cleaning and sanitization practices, and remedial action plan development.  Reviews and approves validation approaches/protocols and reports ensuring compliance to regulatory and company requirements as needed, specifically for cleaning and sanitization validation.  Maintain knowledge of regulatory environment, cGMPs, FDA policies and current industry trends, interface with internal and external auditing groups and global regulatory agencies to discuss hygienic practices for site inspections and provide direction and leadership to assure compliance with quality, environmental and safety regulations as well as company policies.  
Qualifications
 Bachelors degree in Microbiology, Engineering or related discipline, and a minimum of 5 years of related business experience in a  GMPs FDA regulated environment is required.  Experience leading CAPA investigations is preferred and with Hygienic design and processes is required.    Broad-based experience, or combination of experience, in Plant Hygiene controls, HACCP, cosmetic/pharmaceutical manufacturing, facility/utility engineering, microbiology laboratory operations, quality operations, and regulatory compliance is preferred.  Prefer experience and knowledge of Microbial Quality Assurance in Toiletries, Cosmetics, and/or non-sterile Pharmaceuticals.  Knowledge of CFR 210, 211 is preferred.  Must be able to influence people at different levels in a matrix organization.  Strong independent and analytical thinking skills  and project management skills along with excellent written and verbal communication skills.

The Department of Environmental Health and Safety at Stanford University has an opening for a member of the Compliance Assistance Program (CAP). The CAP team member provides compliance, safety, survey, and training support to laboratories and facilities and ensures University compliance with federal, state, and local occupational health & safety regulations. He or she provides in-the-field support for other EH&S technical programs. Additionally, he or she performs other related duties as requested by the supervisor or EH&S management, and provides support as needed to the University during emergencies. All CAP team members must comply with governmental regulations and University and departmental policies and procedures regarding health and safety, and must observe and support good health and safety practices.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:
(55%) Assist areas associated with chemical, biohazardous and radiological materials and wastes with maintaining compliance and good health and safety practices by conducting walk through inspections and developing working relationships with area staff and students. Review environmental health and safety management practices and document findings as appropriate. Conduct follow-up for issues identified and track until resolved. Determine whether to elevate unresolved issues to CAP supervisor or area management as needed. Train area personnel about regulatory requirements and best management practices to facilitate and promote compliance with applicable environmental and hazardous materials laws and regulations as needed. Accompany regulatory inspectors and help to ensure that EH&S policies and local compliance programs are consistent with the interpretations of the inspectors.

(40%) Provide support to EH&S technical programs including Hazardous Waste, Biosafety, Fire, and Industrial Hygiene Programs. Includes helping with implementation of new or revised programs or initiatives, collecting data on laboratory practices and trends. With guidance from Laboratory Safety program, work with researchers to ensure health & safety management systems are in place that meet the requirements of the University’s Chemical Hygiene Plan. Review and make recommendations on written standard operating procedures and conduct follow-up on laboratory incidents. Conduct terminal and routine radiation safety surveys.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE
• At minimum, BA/BS in physical science; MS in a discipline related to health and safety desired.
• Knowledge of occupational health and safety principles and applications; health & safety laws, codes, regulations; guidelines and current technology.

REQUIREMENTS:

• M.S./M.P.H. in Environmental and/or Occupational Health.

• B.S. degree in a scientific field.

• 10+ years experience in comprehensive EH&S practice in the biotech industry that includes employee training on multiple topics for different audiences.

• Prior non-safety work experience in a laboratory setting (desirable for an understanding of lab operations, equipment, and the associated hazards and challenges of lab operations).

• Professional certification as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) through the American Board of Industrial Hygiene and/or a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.

• Membership in at least one professional safety organization is desirable.

• A respected and recognized EH&S professional in the Bay Area is desirable.

• Required strength areas/competencies in chemical safety, laser safety, hazardous waste management, ergonomics, program development, and training.

• Some experience with electrical safety, biosafety, and medical waste is desirable.

• Must serve as a technical resource on EH&S matters and have familiarity with California state and Bay Area local environmental and safety regulations, agencies, and permit requirements. Personal knowledge of actual California and Bay Area inspectors is a plus, but not required.

• Knowledge of typical biotechnology company operations and organizational layouts.

• Strong leadership and management skills, as well as the ability to just pitch in with hands-on support when needed.

• Must know how to implement and utilize line management compliance with EH&S Program requirements (i.e., must command respect and cooperation).
